Here are some simple and easy-to-follow tips for keeping Trachyphyllia Welsophyllia and Scolymia Corals.

Lighting

They only need a low to moderate light and gentle water movement. They must not be placed where sand or debris will collect on its surface, or on rockwork where it can fall, or anywhere sharp objects can lacerate the tissue. We typically shoot for 100-150 PAR. They can be acclimated to higher light but this must be done slowly.

[Trachys, Welsos and Scolys] are not particularly a tough coral at all! Usually, we decide this by asking customers what their parameters are. If they don’t know what they are, what they are targeting, or what they should be, then chances are they may not have the best success keeping these type of corals. We typically recommend the immediate purchase of inexpensive test kits and the establishment of base parameters before they attempt their first piece. This species do require some feeding and a decent knowledge of your water parameters in an ongoing basis but as with everything else there are exceptions. As with anything else these corals can be forgiving in mature tanks with lots of fish and feeding. We advise mature tanks to take on these corals.

Is your water moving? Good.. that’s about it for flow. With that said, we typically recommend that customers have enough flow to move the water around in their tanks to bring oxygen, nutrients, and other trace elements to their corals.  Flow also helps them remove waste.  Random and Wide flow is advised and no you don’t need to target a coral with flow to make it happy. Move water from point A to B as often as possible and your corals will be happy. That said aim for not too much and moderate flow for these guys. Its important not to place these corals in places where there does not exist the chance of getting sand or debris into their mouth.

The most important care that must be exercised for a long-lasting and healthy coral is feeding. They are great eaters and should be fed often and regularly to ensure their health. Many people will find they will recede if not fed.
