Leather Coral Care Guide
Everything you need to know for thriving Soft Coral growth.
🌊 Overview
Leather Corals—including Sinularia, Sarcophyton, and Lobophytum—are hardy soft corals ideal for beginner and advanced reefers. Their flexible nature and mesmerizing movements make them a stunning addition to reef tanks.
📏 Tank Requirements
- Temperature: 75–80°F (24–27°C)
- Salinity: 1.024–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Alkalinity: 8–10 dKH
- Flow: Moderate to strong; avoid direct blast
- Lighting: Moderate to high PAR (100–250); T5 or LED recommended
📍 Placement Tips
Position Leather Corals on stable rockwork with room to expand. Avoid placing them near aggressive stony corals; they release chemicals that may affect neighbors. Active carbon filtration helps mitigate allelopathy.
🥣 Feeding
Though photosynthetic, Leather Corals benefit from target feeding. Use phytoplankton or coral foods like Reef Roids weekly to promote growth and polyp extension.
⚠️ Troubleshooting
- Shedding: Normal part of growth—remove excess mucus with gentle flow.
- No polyp extension: Check lighting, flow, and water parameters.
- Discoloration: Evaluate lighting intensity or possible aggression from nearby corals.
